Today the handball family lost its dearest friend Alexander “Sasha” Kozhukhov, member of the IHF Executive Committee and President of the Commission of Organizing and Competitions (COC). “We are shocked by his unexpected death” IHF President Dr Moustafa stated. “Just recently we had a very close and successful cooperation as part of the Beijing Games.” Kozhukhov died at the age of 66.
With the death of Alexander Kozhukhov, the IHF is mourning one of its best friends and members. Kozhukhov served handball for a long time with his experience and expertise. Following a successful career as a player and a coach on the national and international handball stage, he acted as a member of the IHF’s COC from 1980 until 2004, then becoming President of the COC and a Member of the IHF Executive Committee and the IHF Council. Furthermore he was the President of the Handball Union of Russia from 1992 until 2004 and Executive Committee Member of the Russian Olympic Committee since 1993. In 2004 he became Honorary President of the Handball Union of Russia.
Dr. Hassan Moustafa, President of the International Handball Federation, conveys his condolences to Sasha Kozhukhov’s family, friends, and the Russian Federation. He added that it meant a great loss for the entire handball family and for the IHF and Russian handball in particular. “Sasha Kozhukhov was one of the best and sincerest friends of mine and devoted his time exclusively to handball. He will be remembered in our prayers and be forever in our memory and heart,” President Dr Moustafa said. “Sasha Kozhukhov was not only a friend but a brother. May his soul rest in peace.”
Update 2008-09-05: The funeral will be held on Monday, 8 September 2008, in Moscow. Members of the entire handball family could meet at 8.30 a.m. (local time) at the heatquarters of the Handball Union of Russia for a joint departure (9.00 a.m. local time) to attend the funeral.
